"text": "A DARING OUTLAW.\nLEADER OF BLACK JACK’S\nGANG OF BANDITS.\nUcld-FT p a Train Single-Handed and\nAfterward Fought a Dcspe>rate llattle\nwith Officers — Killed Two Hundred\nMen.\nThe notorious leader of the infamous\n“Black Jack's” gang of train robbeis\nand murderers, Tom Ketchum, now\nlies ia the hospital of the penitentiary\nat Santa Fe, N. M., seriously wounded,\nas the result of an encounter with offi\ncers of the law. Tom held up a train\nsingle-handed and in the sequel to this\nwas wounded and captured. It was\nthe Colorado Southern express that\nTom held up. The place selected was\nnear Fulsom, on the northeast corner\nof New Mexico. One night ns the ex\npress was puffing laboriously up grade\nthe engineer saw a light ahead giving\nthe signal to stop. When the train\nslowed down Tom Ketchum jumped\ninto the cab and, carelessly swinging\na 45 Colt near the engineer's nose,told\nhim to obey all orders given during the\nnext few minutes. This, Tom said,\nwould save heartaches in the engineer's\nhome and the intrusion of an under\ntaker in the family circle. Then he\nJumped off and tried to uncouple the\nengine, which was made impossible by\nthe steep grade. Failing in this, Tom\nwalked back to the Wells-Fargo ex\npress car and, thumping the door with\nthe butt of his Colt, demanded admit\ntance. The messenger opened the door\nand poked the muzzle of a Winchester\nout into the dark and pulled the trig\nger. That put an end to the hold-up\nthat night. Just how badly Tom was\nshot Is not known, but he was wound\ned in a subsequent battle with United\nStates Marshal Foraker’s posse and he\nwill not say how much damage the\nmessenger did. As he declared the\nhold-up off it is probable he was se\nverely injured. The express pulled on\nand Tom Jumped his broncho and\nsought safety in the mountains. The\nattempted robbery was soon known to\nthe officials and three days later Mar\nshal Foraker’s men were hunting for\nTom in the uplands. They finally lilt\nthe trail and followed it hack into the\nvery heart of the mountains. Here\nthey lost it and while discussing the\nbest move a report of a rifle split the\nair and one of the deputies fell out of\nhis saddle. This was sufficient evi\ndence of Tom's presence in the vicin\nity, but not his exact whereabouts, as\nTom used smokeless cartridges. An\nother shot was heart and another depu\nty went to the ground. At this rate\nevery man In the posse would be cut\ndown without a ghost of a chance of\ngetting a shot. The deputies, there\nfore, separated, and began to scout the\nbrush. A glint of sunshine playing on\nthe blue steel barrels of a Winchester\ndiscussed Tom Ketchum’s position be\nhind a big bowlder surrounded by\nbrushwood. Then the day’s proceed\nings began. The deputies shot at that\nglint of sunshine playing along blue\nsteel; Tom shot at the deputies. The\ndeputies dodged behind trees and rocks\nand shot wildly. Tom stayed where\nhe was and made bull-eyes. If Tom\nhadn’t shelved his right arm a little\ntoo high in taking aim he would have\nbrought down a full mess of deputies.\nAs it was a slug of lead as big as your\nfinger tore through Tom’s shooting\nmember, and it took a few minutes\nto change his Winchester over to his\nleft arm. In these short minutes the\ndeputies closed In on Tom and cap\ntured him. He was In a bad shape.\nHis right arm was terribly broken and\ntorn and he was already suffering from\nloss of blood. But he was game. Ho\noffered to take his left arm and begin\nthe performance all over again, which\"\nproposition was respectfully declined.\nThe next day when he was able to be\nmoved Tom was strapped to his bron\ncho and taken to a train, ultimately\nlanding in the penitentiary hospital at\nSanta Fe. Of “Black Jack’s\" gang of\nthieves and cutthroats Tom Ketchum\nwas the leader. He was 35 years old,\nand in Texas, his native state, he is\nknown as the new Jesse James. He\nstands 5 feet 10 inches In his stocking\nfeet and is built on the graceful lines\nof a tiger. He is as void of conscience\nas the Winchester he carried. He\nwould rather shoot a man than eat;\nif the man be an officer of the law it\nwas more fun to kill him than to go\nto a dance. One of his boyhood pas\ntimes was to hire in some convenient\nplace on the ranch in Texas and shoot\nMexican herdsmen. When a lad he\nwas summoned as a witness in a law\nsuit, and not knowing what the sum\nmons meant, and not caring to take\nany chances, shot and killed the officer.\nAfter this he found it convenient to\nchange his residence, so he rode up\ninto New Mexico and Arizona. Here\nhe soon became a terror to everybody\nin general and railroad and express\nsompanies In particular. Ho admits\nin a roundabout way that since 1S88\nhe and his gang have stolen from post-\noffices, trains, stages and wayfarers\n$200,000 and killed 200 men.",
